Booker

T Washington Booker T. Washington was an African American educator, author, orator, and adviser to presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community. Washington was born into slavery in Virginia in 1856. After emancipation, he worked his way through Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University) and became a teacher. He was the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, and under his leadership, it became a center of education and training for African Americans. Washington had a national presence, advocating for African American civil and political rights. He was a proponent of black self-help and racial accommodation. His Atlanta Exposition speech of 1895, which called for blacks to accept segregation for the time being, was particularly influential.
